Snowy River Platypus Count Paddling Expeditions

There are few unique experiences left in the world but being part of a platypus count on the Snowy River would be one of them. This section of the Snowy is so remote that more people would paddle the Franklin River in Tasmania in one season than have been here since European occupation.
Alpine River Adventures will paddle through and survey a 70km Snowy River section within the Byadbo Wilderness section on the Kosciuszko National Park (see our Byadbo Wilderness Album). On previous trips we have been amazed with the abundance of platypus in the section of river; however no studies have ever been conducted here.

A limited number of trips will be run to create the first ever Byadbo Wilderness platypus data to support the Platypus Conservancy’s research. This pilot program will be run by Alpine River Adventures owners Richard Swain and his partner Alison Ruell, who offer two decades of scientific, environmental, and recreational river guiding experience for clients such as Bush Heritage Australia, the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the University of Canberra.

Alpine River Adventures are leading strictly limited five day survey expeditions in 2015. You will also have the opportunity to see abundant wildlife including birdlife, brumbies, emus, kangaroos, wallabies and wombats, gain paddling skills, see amazing scenery and meet other platypus enthusiasts.

Renowned documentary maker/environmental scientist/river guide Stephen Curtain from Exposure, Expeditions and Education in Nature, and formerly the BBC natural history unit, will be collaborating with Alpine River Adventures, although being filmed is optional.
