Snowy River Wilderness - 3 Day Adventure
This was such a great adventure. Remote location, learning rafting skills from experienced guides made it educational and fun. A different kind of activity and a different way of experiencing the beautiful Snowy Mountains. Carrie Murrumbidgee Day Trip
We had the best time white water rafting down the Murrumbidgee River with Richard. He was an amazing and very knowledgeable tour guide who shared with us the Indigenous history of both the river and the landscape! The scenery was beautiful and the rapids were exhilarating. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is looking to have a fun day out in Canberra! Nat Snowy River 5 Day Paddling Expedition
Last October I spent 5 days padding down the Snowy River with Richard and Matt from Alpine River Adventures and three others. We had a great time, I can't recommend it highly enough. The river was spectacular, especially around Snowy Falls (on day 2). Generally the kayaking wasn't too hard but there were a small number of rapids that were a bit of an adrenalin rush. Richard and Matt were very good at helping us through the more demanding parts of the river. The day spent portaging around Snowy Falls was the most challenging but Richard handled it very well and we always felt we were in safe hands.
Highlights for me were seeing many platypus come to the surface of the river near my boat and the beautiful (and comfortable) campsites we had. The food was good, the company was great and the tents we slept in were spacious. The trip was very much one for a lover of the outdoors that was after an adventure. At times it took us a bit outside our comfort zones but it was very rewarding. By the end of the trip I could happily have kept paddling with Richard for another 5 days. Greg Snowy River Paddling - Day Trip
9 of us ranging in ages and abilities did the day trip adventure with Richard and Matt as guides. Their confidence, experience and knowledge of the land was amazing. They pitched the trip to the right level for each of us so we all tested the beauty of the experience. Richard has great way of telling stories of the local legends and that alone was a special experience. One of our best experiences and would highly recommend it DP Canberra Murrumbidgee Rafting - Day Trip
Went on the one day Murrumbidgee rafting trip today. Can not speak highly enough of it! Not only one was it so much fun, and both our guides so professional (thanks Richard and Chris!), but learnt a heap about the local area from our guide Richard as well. If you are after a great day out for less than 30 min from Canberra, thoroughly recommend! Danielle Snowy River Rafting - Day Trip
A group of 5 of us went on the 1 day Snowy River rafting trip on Saturday. It was absolutely brilliant and a great way to see a spectacular part of the world. Richard is passionate about nature and the history of the land and his knowledge only added to the enjoyment. We would recommend that everyone who is thinking of doing a trip with Alpine River Adventures just book it....you will not be disappointed. Stephen Snowy River 5 Day Paddling Expedition - November 2015
We have so enjoyed our wilderness experience with Alpine River Adventures, never seeing another soul for our 5 day paddle on the beautiful Snowy River. And our small group of 7 (incl. 2 guides) enabled easy friendships to be formed, and group cohesion to be maintained. The food was plentiful and delicious, and cooked over an open fire each night. Richard and Alison went to considerable effort to cater for my gluten intolerance, for which I am very appreciative. The camp sites were scenic and spacious, enabling adequate privacy, and we were provided with comfy chairs, generous sized tents, and even a toilet enclosure! At all times on the river, Richard displayed due caution, never risking our safety on the rapids. And his local knowledge of indigenous culture added another level of interest to the trip. His quiet, easy manner and lack of overt time constraints helped us experience a truly relaxing trip. Chris and Wendy Snowy River 5 Day Paddling Expedition I went on the August 5 day Byadbo Wilderness Experience and it was unlike anything I had ever done before. Both Richard and Christian were the perfect guides. The knowledge that Richard had of the land and aboriginal culture really added to the experience as well. I had never kayaked before this trip and while my confidence in my skills was a bit low at the start, Richard made sure I was comfortable throughout the more challenging areas of the river. All the equipment was in great condition and the trip was very well organised. The food was very tasty, with all dietary requirements being catered for. Because of this trip, I got to experience something I never thought I would have and in a place so untouched. I could not recommend this trip enough. Thank you! 5 Day Platypus Survey
I went on the August platypus trip and it was fantastic. Both Richard and Alison and all their crew are wonderful people, they have extensive knowledge of the area, flora, fauna and history. Richard is a skilful river guide with many years experience, has a very personable approach, passionate about the country that he is guiding in, a great sense of humour and very good with people who had little or no experience of paddling. The trip was well organised and never rushed, there was always time allowed to see extra things along the way. The equipment was good and well maintained, food was great and plenty of it with all diets catered for. I would recommend this trip to anyone, even those with no outdoor experience. A trip down the iconic snowy river should not be missed......a trip down the iconic snowy river with Richard and the gang is highly recommended! P.S-saw heaps of platypus :) Nors 5 Day Platypus Survey.
I have just completed the 5 day platypus survey trip with Alpine River Adventures. I can't speak highly enough about the trip, our team leader Richard and the organisation which went into making this a very memorable experience. The equipment provided was of a very high standard . The kayaks were excellent, exactly the right ones for the conditions we experienced. There were numerous rapids and fast flowing water along the way and we all managed to stay in our own individual kayaks. There were two grade 3 rapids and we were given the option to run them or walk around. Very exciting going down these and we all had a go (successfully). Because of the river flow you could paddle as much or as little as you liked generally from about 10am until 3pm. Being winter we needed to stop early to establish camp in daylight. We each had our own 3 man tent which allowed a degree of privacy at night. Richard always made sure our camp site was large and well sited so that we could spread out and do our own thing. The food was plentiful and nourishing. Sitting by the fire at night and having a chat about the day and the area was very enjoyable. This is a real wilderness area, there were no other people or houses along the way, just native animals and the silence. Richard is very knowledgable about the area and had lots of stories of the first inhabitants. He went out of his way to ensure we were safe and as comfortable as possible. This was an epic adventure, challenging and very enjoyable. An experience of a lifetime. Pete Snowy River 5 Day Paddling Expedition - June, 2015
I did the Snowy River trip in June 2015. I understand it was the first commercial trip for this part of the river. I am in awe of what Alpine River Adventures have achieved in setting this up. Despite it being early winter with very short days it was an amazing experience. Not only was the scenery truly stunning, but the white water rafting was exhilerating. The rapids were interspersed with glorious calm spots where you could leisurely paddle while enjoying the scenery and keep an eye out for platypus, of which there were many. On top of that we saw a couple of sites where the aboriginal population had obviously spent some time. Logistically you couldn't fault the organisation. The food was as good as could be expected in the circumstances - definitely nutritious and there was more than enough. The equipment provided allowed us to remain as warm as could be expected with the limited hours of sunlight. You need an adventurous spirit, a preparedness to "rough it" for a few days, and if you do it in winter, a willingness to be cold. But it is a small price to pay for what is on offered. Cheers Simon Snowy River 5 Day Wilderness Expedition
My trip down the Snowy through the gorge was an experience in a lifetime. I know that lower Snowy region well from my walks researching the Bundian Way through Byadbo. It is one of the most remarkable regions of the Australian continent: scenic, dramatic and full of special wildlife and cultural places. The only way to get to know that area is to travel downriver. Walking is well-nigh impossible due to the many cliffs and high ridges that fall directly to the river. Scenic but not walkable. Our group travelled in inflatable kayaks, which were eminently suited to the wild river and its rocky rapids that came regularly enough to make a contrast with the platypus filled calm reaches. Although over 70 years of age, I managed the trip really well. This was in every way due to the quiet management skills of Richard Swain, our tour leader. He was quiet, calm and highly skilled, able to readily pass on his knowledge of the river so that members of our party were put at ease. His organisation and gear were of the highest order. With all its dryness the country round Byadbo and along the lower Snowy stays much warmer in winter than the high country or even the tablelands, and was hence much sought after by the cattlemen for their winter grazing. The landscape is dramatic enough to figure in the national mythology. Banjo Patterson’s setting for his poem The Man from Snowy River captures the scenery perfectly: '…And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise Their torn and rugged battlements on high, Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze At midnight in the cold and frosty sky, And where around the Overflow the reed-beds sweep and sway To the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide, The Man from Snowy River is a household word today, And the stockmen tell the story of his ride.'
